GENTLEMAN.......START YOUR ENGINES
NO ITS NOT THE START OF THE INDY 500 BUT THE SPRING MOWING SEASON.

Mowing has a major impact on lawn appearance and health. Follow a few simple guidelines to assure lawns are mowed properly:

• Don't make the common mistake of mowing too short. For most lawns a mowing height between two and three inches is suggested; with the upper range best for summer. Lawns mowed at higher heights tend to have deeper roots, less weed problems, and look much better. Mowing too close invites problems such as weed invasions. Simply raising the mowing height can have a major impact on the quality of many home lawns. A mowing height of two inches would be fine when grasses are rapidly growing, but the height should be raised as growth slows, stress increases, and when the lawn is in the shade.
• Base mowing frequency on the rate your lawn is growing. Do not remove more than one-third of the grass leaf in any one cutting. Mowing on a regular basis as the lawn needs it is essential. Don't mow when the grass is wet.
• As long as the lawn is mowed on a regular basis and the clippings readily filter back down into the lawn, clippings do not need to be collected. Returned in this manner, clippings readily decompose (contain 75 - 80 percent water) and do not cause thatch. Clippings also recycle nutrients, in particular nitrogen, so less fertilizer is needed.
• Selecting a mower can involve a number of factors, many being personal preference. Mulching mowers do not provide any additional benefit over conventional rotary mowers returning clippings, assuming proper mowing frequency and lawn fertilizing is followed. Regardless of the type of mower, blades need to be kept sharp.
• Mow in the direction that is safest. Periodically change directions if desired, although mowing the same direction each time should not be a problem on taller grass of home lawns.

GREENSCAPE GARDENS PLANT SPOTLIGHT

Shasta Daisy 'Becky' is the plant of the week. Known botanically as Leucanthemum, Shasta daisies have long been popular in the perennial garden because they are so easy to grow.

The cultivar 'Becky' was selected for its long-blooming, 3-inch, bright white flowers with yellow centers. The numerous blossoms are held well above the foliage on sturdy stems that reach about 3 feet tall.

Shasta daisies can be used as either a specimen plant or in groupings for more impact. Although Shasta daisy is a hybrid, it has a wildflower type appearance and can also be used in more natural plantings. It is also a good choice for container gardens, cut flower plantings and butterfly gardens. The white blossoms with yellow centers are harmonious with just about any color combination.

Shasta daisy performs best in full sun, though it will adapt to partial shade, and demands moist, but well-drained soil. Shasta daisies can be propagated using stem cuttings in summer or by division in early spring or late summer.

'Becky' is dependably hardy and provides excellent color from July to September, especially if old flowers are removed to encourage rebloom.

10 REASONS TO PLANT A TREE

1. Trees conserve energy in the summer, and thereby save you money. Properly planted
trees can cut your air-conditioning costs by 15-35%

2. Trees help clean the air. Trees produce the oxygen we breathe, and remove air pollution by lowering air temperature, through respiration, and by retaining particulates.

3. Trees bring songbirds close by. Birdsong will fill the air as trees provide nesting sites, food, and cover for countless species.

4. Trees around your home can increase its value by up to 15% or more. Studies of comparable houses with and without trees place a markedly higher value on tose whoese yards are sheltered by trees.

5. Trees help clean our rivers and streams. Trees hold the soil in place and reduce polluted runoff into our waterways.

6. Trees conserve energy in the winter. Trees can slow cold winter winds, and can cut your heating costs 10-20%.

7. Trees fight global warming. They remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the major contributor to the threat of global warming. Trees planted near our homes and in our communities moderate temperatures and reduce the need for air conditioning and heating produced by burning fossil fuesl, a major souce of excess atmospehric carbon dioxide.

8. Tree make your home and your neighborhood, more beautiful. Trees mark the changing of the seasons, and add grace and seasonal color. Trees make a house feel like a home.

9. Trees are fun! Planting and caring for trees can be a great family and community building activity.

The Society of american Florists (SAF) generated buzz from the national news agencies during the presidential inauguration ceremonies for its 3,500 floral arrangements created by 200 SAF members.

The 2005 Perennial Plant Association Plant of the Year is the Helleborus often called the Lenten Rose. But did you know it is an evergreen perennial? One of the most popular cultivars is the Royal Heritage™ Strain. It includes a dynamic range of flower colors including purple, near-black, red, rose-pink, yellow, pale green, and white. Some are attractively spotted or brushed with a contrasting color. Each blossom has overlapping petals, forming a cup shape about two inches in length. The evergreen, leathery, serrated leaves form an umbrella-like covering which sometimes coddles the nodding flowers. Attractive seed pods create additional interest after the plants are finished blooming. These hybrids typically grow 18-24 inches tall, bloom in early to mid-spring, and are hardy in the St. Louis area. They are available in 1 gallon containers at Greenscape Gardens.

Evergreen Perennials…
• Retain their shape all year long
• Continue to provide interest when other perennials are not in bloom
• Hide dying bulb foliage and summer-dormant perennials
• Come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and bloom times
• Many are shade tolerant

DID YOU KNOW?

Tree bring beauty and practical benefits to modern society. They provide shade, beautify properties, strip pollutants from the air and much more.

Trees save energy. One large tree has the cooling effect of 15 room size air conditioners. Mature trees shading homes cut energy costs by 18 percent to 50 percent.

Trees increase property values. Trees can add up to 20 percent to the value of a home. However, without proper maintenance the value of the trees decline. Timely use of speciality pesticides controls disease and insect damage. Corrective pruning will add value plus increase the life expectancy of the tree.

Trees clean the air. One acre of trees removes 5 tons of carbon dioxide from the air annually. According to the American Forestry Association, one average mature tree absorbs 26 pounds of carbon dioxide per year. The same tree cleans up the pollution created by a car driving 11,300 miles, as well as gives off enough oxygen for a family of four to breathe for a year.

Plant a tree for the future. Check out the trees available at Greenscape Gardens.
