LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITION 200 YEARS AGO TODAY 10/20/1804
Brief capsule entries from the Corps of Discovery Journals

"After a very cold night, rain turns to snow at sunrise and continues all day: They pass the mouth of Heart River, where the Medicine Rock (in today's Medicine Rock State Historic Site south of Elgin) foretells the future by developing white marks, symbols of what is to be. Clark sees a tree used for the sun dance, a ceremony sacred to many Plains Indian tribes, and misunderstands that devotion is being paid to the tree itself."
